Finally took the time last night to watch this amazing documentary by Gary Hustwit. For those of you not familiar, Gary also directed Helvetica, the brilliant documentary about typography. In Objectified, the audience is presented with discussion and commentary about the complex relationship between objects and our human interaction with them. Some of the most influential designers are featured in the documentary, including Chris Bangle (BMW Group, Munich), Tim Brown (IDEO), Naoto Fukasawa (Tokyo), and Jonathan Ive (Apple, California). El Ten Eleven‘s music is featured as well, which is always a good thing.
I especially loved the parts with Karim Rashid. The guy definitely has some intriguing and interesting points regarding the notion of sustainability in the design of today’s products:
If the average shelf life of a high-tech object is less than eleven months, why on Earth does anything have to be built to be permanent? It should be all 100% disposable. You know, I think my laptop should be made of cardboard, or my mobile phone could be a piece of cardboard, or it could just be made out of something like sugarcane or bioplastic.
